In this part of Northern Canada where winters often lasts about six months and summers are just a breath, a cold and misty morning like today’s, seems, to me, like an invocation for fall-winter. In most of Northern BC, Mother Nature is contemplating ( or it has already decided) on changing her lovely summer dress into her colorful fall robe. Yet, she might be more daring and go all in white… who knows.

The first year I move to the north (2004) it snowed at the beginning of September! I couldn’t believe it! My experience in the northern hemisphere was mostly in Vancouver, BC where rain is constant and snow is sporadic (at least in the lower mainland). So, snow is September was quite unexpected; but, surprise is one of M. Nature’s virtues.

In any case, I always find summer’s departure a bit saddening since I am original from a warm climate where summers seem to last forever! I know that I can mourn summer all I want and that would change nothing. It is gone for now.

We all need these cycles in life in order to keep on growing in all aspects of our being: physically, mentally and spiritually. “Little deaths” (being cyclical like in nature or of our psyche) are necessary if we are to evolve and become better beings; Mother Nature knows it. Trees know that if they resist changing their colors, they’ll die. I think we would learn lots and suffer less if we observe nature and accept change as the only constant thing in life (I think it was B. Franklin who said that the only certain thing in life is change).

Hence, now that summer is vanishing and fall and/or winter are emerging in the not so far distance, it would be wise to turn our eyes inward and cultivate our inner garden. Maybe, there are a few weeds and bushes here and there that need to be removed to create space for our perennials to thrive.

May your inner garden flourish this coming fall and winter.
